[travel] Snapshots from Lisbon: fish & pastries & fish pastries

My body was ready for the fabled pastel de nata. That Portuguese pastry, with which I have been harboring a hopeless helpless love for years, was the main reason I booked my tickets to Lisbon. I am well acquainted with this creamy, flaky custard tarts; back in the days in Hong Kong, the bf and I found every chance to indulge ourselves in this precious golden pastry, and I sometimes had to resort to those feeble tarts in Seoul to satisfy my sweet tooth. It was a religious moment when I brought myself to the most famous, oldest pastel de nata cafe in Belém, when I finally saw those real authentic beauties with my own eyes and carefully savored them as tears came out of my eyes and all those wasted years of eating the second-rated tarts flashed by with a tinge of shame and regret.

As much as I adored egg tarts, Lisbon’s culinary scene turned out to spread farther and wider than those pastries. Lisbon has to be my food city in Europe, everything was so cheap and so good, so authentic and so hearty. For 5 days there my belly was filled to the seams with amazing seafood, sensational pastries and, well, let’s throw in some alcohol to make everything jollier, shan’t we?

Before going to Paris, like any first timers, I was anxious about where to chill away an afternoon the Parisian way when I came across some reviews about Angelina. Our stop at this chic, oh-so-Paris Salon du Thé was one of my culinary highlights during the whole trip. [eat] Eating out in The Hague: Will’s Pancake House & The Cheesecake Company

The bf and I went to The Hague (Den Haag) last Saturday to visit the famed Escher Museum. Having to pay 20euro pp for a roundtrip ticket from Utrecht to The Hague, I wanted to see as much of The Hague as possible (the Peace Palace, for example). Too bad, the typical insane Dutch weather prevented us from even walking like a normal person. At least we managed to get to the museum alive, as well as got to try some yummy stuffs at the famous Will’s Pancake House and The Cheesecake Company.

[eat] Coffee and bagel at Bagels & Beans @ Utrecht, the Netherlands

Every city in the Netherlands has a Bagels & Beans branch, but its quality is not at all compromised by its popularity. Bagels & Beans hit all the points I need in a cafe: wooden tables (I am a nutter for wooden tables, deal with it), flowers on each table (extremely important), bright interior (for photos), yummy BAGELS (who doesn’t love bagels?), and great coffee. In fact, the cappuccino I had there was the best I have ever had in the Netherlands. And my bf–a coffee connoisseur (at least compared to me)–only had compliments for Bagels & Beans’ coffee.

[tea house] Tea time at Tea Terrace @ Hongdae, Seoul

If you wander to the far opposite end of the main road in Hongdae, you’ll be surprised to see that the place carries a totally different vibe from that of the usual Hongdae you’re accustomed to. It is quiet, cosy and naturally better. In the event of showing my cousin around during her trip to Korea, I decided to take her to this part of Hongdae as the first stop (who doesn’t go to Hongdae really) and showed her around as an eager  tour guide. That’s how we stumbled upon Tea Terrace when it was relatively late in the evening. I didn’t want to go in at first, only to be convinced a moment later by my cousin to check this place out. So basically, shoutout to my beloved cousin who made this post into reality ㅋㅋ.

[cafe] Breakfast and waffle at Du sel brillant Flower café @ Apjujeong, Seoul

First of all I am terribly sorry about the lack of consistency and productivity. School work has been a pain in the butt and I’m also on a strict diet thus the disappearance. For the time being I will not be able to visit any restaurant for I really need to get fit before winter comes. But you know my cafe quest is unstoppable. Too many cafes yet too little time to discover.

Both of us bloggers (and also a friend of us who was Lacrymamosa’s lowcarb buddy) have an obsessive compulsive love for flowers. That’s why when I first saw Du sel brillant I was immediately enthralled just at the very first glance at the cafe’s porch as there were many little flower pots hung on the balcony. Until now I still believe Vert et blanc deserves the title of the best cafe in Seoul for its bright atmosphere, the delicate furniture arrangement and the flowers. Du sel brillant, however, comes in second for many reasons.

Just realized that I haven’t posted for a longggg while T-T So today is a combined post of two cafes in Utrecht for your delight. Both have awesummm pastries and both made my tummy very happy >v< This afternoon I went to Tastoe–a small cafe (like most cafes here) famous for its delish cheesecake. Any cafe with good cheesecake is a cafe worth going to, I tell you. Last week I randomly popped into Bond en Smolders because I couldn’t resist the sweets on display T-T Little did I know that it is also one of the most popular bakery cafes in Utrecht xD

[cafe] Korean traditional tea at 수요일 @ Insadong, Seoul

As much as I am a big fan of tea, Korean traditional tea had never really been on my must-try or favorite list. For sure I had tried few times before, but more often than not I’d  found Korean tea rather bland and not exactly…tea. Unlike the usual tea made from leaves, in Korea they also make tea from wheat, dry seeds and various fruit herbs which until now, still sounds incredibly weird to me because those kinds of tea don’t have the distinctive flavors we find in this classic drink. Nevertheless the trip I made to Insadong a while ago definitely stirred something different in me and gave me a more positive viewpoint about Korean traditional tea.
